Benefits for the member artists
When highly talented people get together, a wonderful ferment occurs — interesting conversations, much laughter, ideas playing off each other.
New or emerging artists
- Learn from experienced artists—attitudes, inspiration, ways of thinking about their art.
- Receive encouragement and direction for their work.
- Get help with technical problems.
- Learn such things as how to write a show proposal and how to install a show, which they may need to know for their personal art careers.
- Learn of exhibition opportunities and maybe get in a national show and win a prize. (It’s happened.)
- Get picked up by a gallery. (It’s happened.)
- Receive incentives to maintain high standards for their work because they exhibit with very talented people.
Established artists
- Time to give back and leave a legacy.
- Maintain excitement about their work; recapture the joy; stimulate their intellect.
- Mentor younger, newer artists—share their knowledge and insights about art.
- Provide a role model.
- Be around interesting people.
Benefits for the entire art community
- As West Coast Drawing members exhibit together, the art community learns that drawing is not just a preliminary to painting but legitimate art on its own.
- As the community becomes more accepting of drawing as art, more galleries are willing to accept artists toiling in drawing media because the public is willing to purchase it.
- Artists who like to draw find more joy in their work as it becomes more acceptable.
How we accomplish this
- Membership juried by the existing members. Only the best accepted. Total members limited to 25.
- Monthly (or thereabouts) meetings where we see important art events, hear speakers, or just enjoy a great exchange of ideas.
- Annual exhibitions to show the art community just how good drawing can be and to educate the public about how good art doesn’t have to be painting.
- Platinum Pencil Award given occasionally to members of the art community who have done distinguished work in advancing the art of drawing (Herbert Olds, Debra Babylon, Mark-Elliott Lugo.)
