As artist and archaeologist, I “dig” trash. By mimicking scientific methods of artifact collection, classification, analysis, and display, I transform roadside litter into art, and art into a simulacrum of science. I call the process “translitteration.”

It is certainly true that creativity, perserverance, intuition, and a sense of wonder are integral to both scientific and artistic pursuits. Fact and fantasy remain flipsides of the same coin, bottlecap and tire weight. I hope that my artwork illuminates this point.

In 2008 I retired from 30 years as a District Archaeologist for the California Department of Transportation. With this background in environmental studies, my interest in science and history continues to provide inspiration for my art.
